Tan's robotic fish research was recently featured on Big Ten Networks LiveBIG.
The Smart Microsystems Lab, directed by Prof. Xiaobo Tan, is developing fish-like robots and exploiting them for various underwater sensing applications. Their “flagship” robots, called gliding robotic fish, combine highly maneuverable fin-based swimming and energy-efficient gliding, and hold tremendous potential in long-duration operation in various water environments. Working with collaborators, Tan’s group is exploring the use of gliding robotic fish in sampling harmful algal blooms and tracking live fish in the Great Lakes.
