BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action, an NSF Science and Technology Center

With my many colleagues at MSU and internationally, the BEACON center studies solution of real-world problems using evolutionary computation and develop new methods as required to solve increasingly challenging problems. Areas of current interest include optimization of greenhouse climate control to maximize crop production and minimize energy use (see picture of experimental greenhouse in China where we gather data to parameterize the model); design of robotic and other mechatronic systems in a new joint Center for Evolutionary Intelligence and Robotics between BEACON and Shantou University, China (see picture of me discussing work of students there in November, 2015); and improvements to and visualization of solutions of many-objective evolutionary optimization algorithms.
Group members (Students and/or collaborating faculty): About 600 members; half at MSU, half at UTA, UW, UIdaho, NC A&T
