Dr. Xiaobo Tan, Michigan State University Foundation Professor of electrical and computer engineering, recently received a $265 NSF grant: “RI: Small: Collaborative Research: Information-driven Autonomous Exploration in Uncertain Underwater Environments”. Congratulations!
This three-year project, which is in collaboration with Prof. Todd Murphey’s group from Northwestern University, is focused on developing the theory and algorithms for autonomous navigation of mobile sensing platforms, so that the collected information is maximized while constraints on movement capabilities and energy expenditure are accommodated. We take underwater sensing as a case study, but the resulting advances are expected to be instrumental for ground and aerial robots as well.
