ABSTRACT

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) falls under the category of Inverse Problems, where knowing the output to a predefined input, one has to determine the state of the structure. This requires precise determination of System Transfer Function which in turn requires development of physics based numerical/analytical models for different types of flaws normally encountered in the service of metallic and composite structures.  In other words, SHM fall under the category of System Identification problem. This talk will first introduce the Spectral Finite Element Method (SFEM) as an analysis tool for modeling wave propagation in 1-D and 2-D metallic and composite structures. Following this, SFEM simplified models for delamination, fiber breaks, multiple delaminations, modeling of porosity, notch damage, corrosion, and model for degraded composite due to moisture absorption, will be presented. An efficient method of computing Lamb wave modes for composite and graded structures will be outlined. Next, extension of SFEM model to simulate stiffened structures is presented followed by the modeling of debonding between skin and the stiffeners. The talk will also present some of the damage detection methodologies developed at the Indian Institute of Science, which include the Damage Force Method and Strain Energy based method.

Prof. Gopalakrishnan received his Master’s Degree in Engineering Mechanics from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Chennai and Ph.D from School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Purdue University, USA in the year December 1992. Subsequently, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology.  In 1997, he joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, and is currently its Chairperson. He also holds KSIIDC Chair Professorship. His main areas of interest are Wave Propagation in complex media, Computational Mechanics, Smart Structures, Structural Health Monitoring, MEMS and Nano Composite Structures.

Prof. Gopalakrishnan has extensively published his work on many top rated international journals. He has a total of 195 international journal papers, 7 graduate level textbooks, two undergraduate books, 11 book chapters, and 145 international conference papers with an h-index of 43 in Google scholar with nearly 6600 citations. His notable contribution is in popularizing Spectral Finite Element as an analysis tool for wave propagation in complex media. He is on the editorial board of 9 international journals and is the Associate editor for Smart Materials and Structures and Structural Health Monitoring international journals. Prof. Gopalakrishnan has won numerous awards and honors, which include, Structural Health Monitoring person of the year award-2016, Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Associate Fellow-AIAA, Distinguished Alumnus Award, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Chennai, Satish Dhawan Young Scientist Award by Government of Karnataka, Biren Roy Trust award of Aeronautical society of India, Alumni Award of excellence in research at IISc in the year 2013 and the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK Distinguished visiting Fellowship.

Prof. Gopalakrishnan is one of the highly cited Aerospace researchers in the world. He is currently President of the Institute for Smart Structures and Systems. He has attracted research funding from Boeing, Pratt & Whitney Corporation, Office of Naval research, AFOSR, USA, and the Aeronautical Research and Development Board. Within IISc, he has held various administrative positions. He was the Associate Chairman for Center for Scientific and Industrial Consultancy and the founder Chairman of Intellectual Property cell. He is currently a Resource Executive for the Society for Innovation and Development and the convener for the Pratt & Whitney Center at IISc.
