“High-Performance Electric Machine and Drive Systems”

Abstract:

Andrew Babel will present some of the technical aspects of developing electric machines and power electronics systems for the aerospace and building systems industries.

While each has its own challenges, UTC’s commercial and aerospace applications are driven by cost, reliability and performance.  Magnetic bearings, wireless power transfer, hybrid-electric propulsion, and more electric aircraft technologies are all pushing the bounds of existing power electronics systems technology.  With the use of wide-bandgap semiconductors, some of these new topologies are possible, but new challenges are also introduced.

The talk will address challenges related to high-performance electric machine and drive systems: some challenges of designing torque-dense electric machines and power electronics control techniques used to drive them.

Bio:
Andrew Babel is a Senior Research Engineer in the Power Electronics Group of the Systems Department at the United Technologies Research Center, East Hartford, Connecticut, US.  He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering in 2009 and 2012 and the Ph.D. degree in 2014 under Prof. E. G. Strangas with the Electrical Machines and Drives Laboratory, all from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA. From March through September 2013, he was a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Graz, Graz, Austria, on the Marshall Plan Foundation Scholarship.

His research interests include condition monitoring, electrical machine design, and the control of electrical machines and power electronics.
